Plan submissions discussed

The absence of several West Harbour Community Board members meant a quiet meeting for the board last Wednesday, at Port Chalmers Town Hall.

At its public forum, the board heard from Port Chalmers resident John Innes, who shared his thoughts about the need for a disposal site for "black" and "grey" water from campervans in the Back Beach area.

Proposals for the area meant a likely increase of freedom camping, which meant a proper disposal site needed to be set up.

"We really need to look after our coastal and harbour areas," Mr Innes said.

He also expressed his opposition to any proposal to close off the access road at Back Beach, saying it was vital for emergency services access.

Board members agreed and expressed confidence that the road would remain open.

Moving on to business, the board accepted apologies from Wayne Sefton, Barbara Anderson and Jarrod Hodson, before moving on to the governance support officer’s report.

The main highlights of the report were opportunities for the West Harbour Community Board to make submissions on the Dunedin City Council’s draft 9 year plan, the Local Water Done Well plan and Otago Regional Council’s passenger transport plan.

Board chairwoman Angela McErlane led a discussion on submissions, and the board decided to hold a workshop to prepare submissions on the various plans, as well as the Otago Regional Council Annual Plan.

The board’s community plan was also checked, and a discussion arose around shifting some priorities — in particular, the need to lobby the Dunedin City Council for the resurfacing of the carpark in George St, Port Chalmers and the installation of a mobility park.

Board member Duncan Eddy also highlighted that planning for extreme weather events should be a higher priority in the community plan.

The board also discussed plans for Anzac Day commemorations on April 25, which were on track for Port Chalmers and West Harbour.
