The true source of ingredients for the popular Sri Lankan vegetarian curries served at Dunedin’s Yours cafe and venue will be explored in a new documentary to be filmed early next year.

Two members of workers co-operative Otepoti Possibilities Co-operative, Carl Naus and Bhagya Heragh, will head to Sri Lanka in the New Year to visit whanau and tour local small holder producers, forest gardens and coconut mills.

They will also embrace home cuisine and learn family recipes, with the goal of sharing this knowledge with the community via Yours cafe.

While in Sri Lanka, Mr Naus will put his experience as a videographer to good use, filming the experience with Ms Heragh as presenter.

"It will be fascinating to meet the people who are producing the ingredients that we use in our recipes," Mr Naus said.

"So we can show the people here the true origins of the food they are eating.

"Sharing is what we want: of kai, knowledge, understanding and resources. As diaspora kids, straddling worlds, we stay true to both parts of ourselves by bringing those worlds closer."

Otepoti Possibilities Co-operative is funding some of the costs of the trip.

It is also running a Boosted campaign, under the heading of "Mother Tongue, Ōpco Media Syndicate/Film" to help cover the remaining costs of the trip.

The campaign closes tonight.
