People from different Pacific Island communities in Dunedin have been getting out of the house and into nature during weekly walks.

The Savali Series, a Samoan word meaning "walk", is part of health promotion activities run by Pacific Trust Otago.

Dietitian and health services director Finau Taungapeau said the main goal of the initiative was to increase the level of physical activity among Pasifika people in a fun atmosphere that also showcased different walking tracks around Dunedin.

The walks rotated hosting duties among different Pacific Island communities, with the Tuvalu community taking the lead during the most recent event last Saturday.

This helped ensure local communities could connect with members in ways that recognised the diverse cultures and traditions of Island peoples and enhanced the relationships among different Pacific cultures, she said.

The events not only focused on walking but also included warm-up exercises and Zumba sessions, adding a fun and engaging twist to the health-promoting activities.

Each event also had a theme, such as wearing red or wearing rugby jerseys.

Communities that have taken the lead each week have included the Samoan, Cook Islands, Tongan and Fijian communities.

The Otago Kiribati Community is hosting the next event in the series, a walk taking place tomorrow from 6pm along the Ravensbourne Cycle Track, starting at 65 Magnet St.

The theme for the night will be wearing anything yellow, blue, red or white, which are the colours of the Kiribati flag.
