Lyttelton-based musician Mel Parsons has lived the life of a troubadour for many years, travelling the road in New Zealand and abroad with her guitar.

Sometimes she travels with a band, but for her current tour in support of new album Sabotage, which came out in June, it will just be Parsons and her promoter.

The two-month tour involves no fewer than 20 regional shows, including a Dunedin appearance this Friday at Moons.

Parsons told The Star that she was loving being on the road again, relishing the chance to drive through the spectacular landscapes of Te Waipounamu.

"I just love it — when you are driving through the country, you can stop and see a lot of places and meet people," she said.

"I’ve been doing it for a long time and it never gets old."

Parsons enjoys both aspects of performance — playing with a band and playing solo, enjoying the challenge of adapting to each style.

"I do enjoy playing solo — it gives me the opportunity to change things up when I want to."

Sabotage is the multi-award winning artist’s sixth studio album, recorded in Lyttelton at Basement Studio and co-written and produced with Josh Logan.

In it, a contemplative Parsons weaves together a tapestry of ethereal and hypnotic soundscapes, with songs that are raw and sometimes dark.

"The feedback on the album so far has been really great.

"I’m thrilled with people’s response to it."

She has recently returned from Canada, where she performed at the prestigious Vancouver Folk Festival, in the company of an old friend.

"It was amazing being part of that big, beautiful festival.

"While I was performing, Don McGlashan jumped up to play with me, which was great fun."

After this South Island tour, Parsons plans to return home to Lyttelton for some rest and writing time, before heading to Canada again early next year.
