If you are looking for just the right Christmas bauble to mark 2020, then Christine Philp has you covered.

The Artsenta artist, who enjoys making complex works from small components, was inspired to make her wool-based Covid baubles after seeing the signature, spiky virus image "everywhere".

"So, I decided to base them on tightly rolled-up balls of red wool, with skewers and beads to represent the Covid virus," Philp said.

"And as an extra, I put the year on it, because hopefully we won’t want them next year.

"I guess you could say, these Covids are the only sort it’s good to have."

During Covid-19 lockdown earlier this year, Artsenta staff used social media to connect with artists and make suggestions for projects to tackle to pass the time.

"It was good to have some interesting artistic exercises to do, it helped to keep things interesting."

Philp was pleased when Artsenta reopened and artists could gather again to work on their projects.

"It’s a nice, light space, and I quite like that you can see what everyone is doing," she said.

Along with her Covid baubles, Philp has created brooches and earrings using paper, PVA, and paper clips along with fridge magnets and painted rocks — all of which will be on display in next week’s Artsenta Market Day.

Featuring a broad selection of creations, from cards, Christmas decorations and ornaments to fibre art, paintings, mosaics and pottery, the annual market day is a great outlet for Artsenta artists to share their work.

The Artsenta Market Day will be held next Wednesday, December 9, from 11am to 2pm at 462 Princes St. All welcome.
