They are moments that inspire Taieri College prefect Matthew Mortimer.
The 18-year-old has amassed a myriad of academic achievements during his secondary education but says his greatest mental challenge in recent years has been to choose a career path.
Matthew has kept his career options open by studying a variety of subjects.
Last year, he achieved NCEA level 2 with excellence and 164 credits, and was winner of year 12 school prizes for history, physics, English, computer studies, chemistry, public speaking, writing, speech and drama.
"Whatever I choose for a career, it must focus on my strengths but it also has to be enjoyable and challenging."
Although Matthew has a passion for writing and reading - particularly classics - he plans to study law at the University of Otago next year.
"Writing is something I really want to do. I love the way writers like Terry Pratchett can play with words.
"It's inspiring, but I'm realistic about the practicality of a career in writing. It wouldn't be as easy to find a career path."
Matthew is careful to balance the long hours he spends studying, with extra-curricular activities such as theatresports (2005-08), and playing clarinet in school ensembles.
He also has a good sense of direction in the outdoors and was third in the 2007 Otago Schools Orienteering Championships.
Achievements: Pupil mentor and cultural committee (2008); academic blue (2008); Otago MUNA commendation for public speaking (2007); ICAS English high distinction, science distinction, mathematics distinction (2006); third New Zealand Young Historians Competition and the Dunedin Secondary Schools History Teachers Association quiz (2007).
Role model: American writer and radio show host Garrison Keillor.
Hopes for the future: To study law at the University of Otago.
