Otago tennis fans will be able to cheer for one of their own at the Australian Open today.

Queenstown's Ben McLachlan makes his grand slam debut, alongside Germany's Jan-Lennard Struff, in the opening round of the men's doubles competition in Melbourne.

The pair will meet Australian duo Jordan Thompson and Thanasi Kokkinakis.

At 73rd in the world, McLachlan has the highest doubles ranking of the four players in the game.

His partner is 190th - although is 53rd in singles - while Thompson and Kokkinakis are 87th and 178th respectively.

There are 64 pairs entered in the men's doubles competition.

The 25-year-old had a good build-up to the tournament, winning two matches to make it through to the semifinals of the Canberra Challenger.

A doubles specialist, McLachlan has had a big past six months.

Having switched allegiances to Japan - being eligible through his mother - he has seen his world ranking rise rapidly.

Most notable of his achievements was winning the Japan Open title last year, beating two former grand slam-winning pairs along the way.

He also represented Japan at the Davis Cup last year.
