School game goes ahead

Four of the five Otago premier school games scheduled for the weekend were postponed due to poor weather on Saturday.

The games will be rescheduled for later in the season and may have to be played midweek.

Two schools braved Saturday's bitterly cold conditions, though. The Mt Aspiring College team travelled down to Dunedin on Friday for its match with John McGlashan College the next day and did not want to leave without playing.

The match was shifted from the school to the sandy surface at Kettle Park.

The home side, the defending champion, won 26-5 but it had to work hard for the victory.

The weather proved a leveller but Mt Aspiring also showed tenacity on defence.

McGlashan dominated possession and territory and eventually that told. Hooker George Bell went over for two first-half tries to give his side a 14-0 lead at the break.

His brother, openside flanker Henry Bell, also got his name on the scoresheet.

While it was a good day for the Bell family, it was also good for the McGlashan forward pack, as captain Reon Lowery added a fourth try to seal the team's fourth consecutive win.

King's High School is also undefeated with four wins, while Waitaki Boys' High School and Otago Boys' High School 2nd XV round out the top four places.

There is a logjam in the middle of the table, where South Otago High School, Dunstan High School, St Kevin's College and Mt Aspiring have all posted one win from three games.

Kavanagh College, which defaulted its round three match to McGlashan, and Taieri College are yet to win a game.
