Rugby: West Otago club gearing up for anniversary celebrations

The Heriot Rugby Football Club has not produced any All Blacks but two former players who received their grounding at the club later played for New Zealand.

Harrison Rowley played against Australia in 1949 and Don Oliver played in two tests against the British and Irish Lions in 1930.

The club, which celebrates its 125th anniversary on the weekend of April 16-18, has provided two Otago Rugby Football Union presidents in the past 25 years.

Jack Park and Iain Fletcher made huge contributions at their own club and had an influence on Country and Otago rugby.

Club highlights include beating Matakanui 11-4 to win the White Horse Cup in 1928 and winning the Countrywide competition in 1994.

Heriot has won the West Otago competition 11 times in the past 25 years.

The West Otago sub-union joined South Otago to form the Southern Region in 2001.

Former Commonwealth Games 10,000m gold medallist Dick Tayler will be the guest speaker at the anniversary dinner.

A feature of the celebrations will be the senior match against Lawrence at the club grounds on the Saturday afternoon.
