University A won a messy game at Watson Park when big lock Albert Herron scored after 12 minutes in the second spell.
Harbour led 7-6 at the break but the students snatched the lead with Herron's try and its strong defence enabled it to hold on to its advantage in the second spell.
Herron was mobile around the paddock and supplied the students with usable ball from the line-out.
Hoani Matenga was lively and his support play was of a high standard.
Halfback Sean Romans gave the student backs good ball but they squandered the advantage by dropping the ball and making other silly mistakes.
Romans was dangerous when probing the short side.
Hooker Pete Mirrielees, the stand-out Harbour player, was tigerish on the drive and with the pick and go.
Ra Kahukiwa was a lively No 8 and dangerous when running with the ball in hand.
University A 11 (Albert Herron try; Sean Romans 2 penalty goals),
Harbour 10 (Siaosi Folau try; Jonny Hughes conversion, penalty goal).
Half-time: Harbour 7-6.
