Rugby: Harbour down Zingari-Richmond

Harbour retained the Scoles Memorial Trophy with a win over Zingari-Richmond at Forsyth Barr Stadium.

But the Hawks could have won by more points if they had not blown six tries by knock-ons and by pushing the passes too quickly.

It was a disjointed game that was punctuated by mistakes from both teams and by a lack of purpose and continuity in the attack.

Harbour scored two breakout tries to lead 16-0 at the break.

The first came after 34 minutes, when Zingari turned the ball over 5m from the Harbour line.

Harbour broke out of its own 22m and there was an inter-change of passing that took the movement 95m before hooker Pete Mirrielees scored.

Winger Wayne Gibson made the initial break for the next try and he passed inside to centre Lex Kaleca, who ran 70m to score.

Veteran Andrew Melville came on in the second spell and helped the Zingari cause with some strong driving runs.

He was backed by dependable No 8 Chris Bell and prop Jeremy Bekhuis, as the Zingari pack exerted pressure that led to a try by prop Chris Preddy.

The key players for Harbour were the hard-running Gibson, lock Dalton Ellis, flankers Angus Duckett and Eben Joubert, and hooker Mirrielees.

Harbour 19 (Dalton Ellis, Pete Mirrielees tries; Ollie Cuthill 3 pen),  Zingari-Richmond 10 (Chris Preddy try; Mark Hunter con, pen). Halftime: Harbour 16-0.
