Rugby: Unexpected win for Otago

Otago has pulled off an unexpected win over powerful neighbour Southland in a pre-season rugby clash in Balclutha today.

Otago, a rank underdog following a tumultuous year off the field and a huge turnover of players, conceded a late try but held on to win 32-31.

Southland, stacked with Highlanders and experienced provincial players, led 19-15 at halftime.

Loose forwards Paul Grant and Gareth Evans and halfback Fumiaki Tanaka were the stars for Otago.
