Rugby: Thomson back for Shield challenge

All Black loose forward Adam Thomson made a successful return from injury on Saturday and said he was available for Otago's Ranfurly Shield challenge against Wellington on Friday night.

Thomson had been out of all rugby since breaking a bone in his right hand during the French test at Carisbrook on June 13.

But his injury is on the mend and he had a hit-out for the Kaikorai club on Saturday in a match against Taieri at Peter Johnstone Park.

Though Kaikorai lost 47-14, Thomson showed his class with plenty of work on defence and a couple of impressive runs on the rare times Kaikorai got the ball.

He showed his speed in running down Taieri left winger Ryan Shortland midway through the second half.

Kaikorai was on defence for most of the match, and Thomson made many tackles.

After the game, Thomson (27) said his hand felt good.

It was still in a soft cast, and was bandaged on Saturday, but he had had an X-ray on Friday which showed it was well on the mend.

"It felt good to get out on the field and play some footy. That's what you want to do. It's been long enough on the sidelines," he said.

While he had not been troubled by the hand during the game, he had felt it on the odd occasion.

Thomson said he had enjoyed the game, and with a full week of training this week he would be set to go, if selected, for the Shield challenge in the capital.

Thomson was a sideline spectator in Otago's 19-14 loss to Southland in Invercargill on Friday night.

Saturday's match was his first club game this year, with Super 14 and test commitments having ruled him out before the injury.

Thomson usually plays for University A, but as that side did not have a game at the weekend, a slot was arranged for him with Kaikorai.

Adam Hill, who usually plays in the loose forwards for Kaikorai, played at second five-eighth for the side on Saturday.

Thomson was not the only guest player on display on Saturday.

Otago midfield back Aaron Bancroft came on for Taieri in the second half.

Bancroft, whose Harbour side was also not playing on Saturday, needed game time after struggling with an ankle injury in recent weeks.
