Rugby: Taieri beats Kaikorai 35-9

An inspirational performance from captain Charlie O'Connell laid the foundation for Taieri's bonus-point victory at Bishopscourt.

The No 8 featured in all facets of play, having a leading role in two of Taieri's four tries.

The first was when he burst loose deep in his own half only to be brought down 20m out.

After four more phases, O'Connell gathered the tackled ball and dived over for the try.

His dominance at the back of the line-out resulted in Taieri's third try when the ball was quickly fed through the Taieri backs for Shannon Young to score.

Winger Tom Davie capitalised on some good service inside him to score Taieri's other two tries, his second a direct result of a clever kick between the Kaikorai backs by Carne Parata, providing Davie with a dream bounce.

The quality work done by O'Connell and Jeremy Corliss was complemented by some first-class service at halfback by Parata and first five-eighth Hayden Parker.

Parker grew in stature as the game progressed.

He made good use of his options and put in some keen defensive work.

Despite starting well, the wind went from Kaikorai's sails through too many handling errors and the loss of its captain Cam Rutherford early in the second half through injury.

Taieri 35 (Tom Davie 2, Charlie O'Connell, Shannon Young tries; Hayden Parker 3 conversions, 3 penalty goal), Kaikorai 9 (Cam Rutherford 3 penalty goals).

Halftime: Taieri 10-9.

Referee: Jeff Grubb.
