Otago will take its first step into a new sevens campaign with a series of warm-up games against Southland in Balclutha today.

The side is coached this year by Luke Herden, taking over from Roy Hawker, who has stepped back from the role after three years.

The squad is made up mainly of Otago ITM Cup players along with a sprinkling of promising players.

Herden said the side had been training for about a month and was working hard on its fitness.

''We have got a squad of about 20 players, while there are some other players training with us to keep up their fitness looking towards the 2015 season.''

After the hit-out today, the side will have a series of practice matches against teams from South Canterbury and Southland in Dunedin on December 6.

The following week, the regional qualifying tournament for the national sevens will be played in Timaru.

The top five sides from the southern region will go forward to the national tournament in Rotorua in mid-January.

The side had a boost earlier this week when backs Tony Ensor and Fa'asiu Fuatai were named as contracted national sevens players for this year.

Fuatai picked up a hamstring strain at a national training camp last week and will be out for a couple of weeks but Ensor should play today.

ITM Cup players in the squad are Kieran Moffat, Matt Faddes, Peter Breen and Michael Collins. Collins will play in the forwards.

Young players in the squad are Gavin Stark, Josh Ioane and Josh Gordon. Young Otago lock Josh Dickson was training with the team but has been called into the Highlanders and will train with them for the next few weeks.

Some school pupils - Chris McNoe, Reece Mau'u (both Otago Boys' High School) and Thomas Johnson (Kaikorai Valley College) have been training with the squad.

Otago Boys' is off to play in the Condor national sevens event in Auckland next weekend.

Herden said the side had plenty of pace with the likes of Ensor and Stark and would look to move the ball round, and had plenty of options as playmakers. A captain was yet to be selected.

Otago has had a proud record in sevens in recent years. Herden said it was the only province in the country to have made the top eight of the national tournament for the past five years.

It narrowly lost in the quarterfinals last year to eventual winner Wellington.
