Southern showed its dominance at the first scrum and it continued its control throughout the game against Taieri for the Roy Nieper Trophy at Carisbrook.
The front row of Warren Moffat, Jed Vercoe and Scott Herriot used powerhouse tactics to control the set pieces.
Vercoe took three tightheads in the first half and in the second half an injury-depleted Taieri team was forced to adopt Golden Oldie scrums for the last 20 minutes.
The Southern forward dominance was also shown at the line-out through the efforts of flanker Tom Preece and lock Simon Knight.
Preece made six clean takes and Knight seven.
Knight impressed by his ability to make four takes off Taieri throws to the line-out.
Jeremy Corliss was a hard tackling and lively loose forward for Taieri, but by himself he was not able to match the skill of the Southern loose trio of Sam Crompton, Ollie Spence and Tom Preece.
The forwards gave the Southern backline quick ball that was used efficiently with Luke Herden having an outstanding game in the midfield and scoring a hat trick of tries.
Fullback Apelu Apalati added pace when he entered the line and he made Southern's first try after 20 minutes when he cut through the centre and Vercoe was in support to score the try.
Apalati used his speed to score a try just before the break when he followed up a Herden kick into the Taieri 22m.
It gave Southern a 16-13 lead at the break.
It took complete command in the second spell when it scored three more tries and 30 more points.
Two of the tries came from scrums close to the line when Herden used his strength to burst through the defence.
It was only the accurate goal kicking of first five-eighth Michael Witt that kept Taieri in touch until the last quarter.
He kicked his five attempts at goal and it was surprising when he decided to go for an attacking line-out when Taieri had two other kickable penalties early in the second spell.
Knight grabbed the ball at both line-outs.
The support play of the ball carrier from Taieri was also lacking when breaks were made.
Southern 46 (Apelu Apalati, Luke Herden 3, Jed Vercoe tries; Herden conversion, dropped goal, Joe Burford 2 conversions, 2 penalty goals, Hamish McKenzie penalty goal, dropped goal), Taieri 19 (Jeremy Corliss try; Michael Witt conversion, 4 penalty goals).
Half-time: Southern 16-13.
Referee: Ross Barnett.
