Rugby: Quarter of test tickets sold

More than a quarter of the tickets for the test between the All Blacks and Wales have been snapped up, with Carisbrook set to be sold out for the third year in a row.

Yesterday was the final day tickets could be bought exclusively by the rugby community, which includes club members and others in Otago, Southland, and North Otago.

Otago Rugby Football Union marketing manager Doug McSweeney said more than 7500 tickets had been sold, a number that pleased him.

It was about 300 ahead of the corresponding time last year and he said people seemed to be excited about the test.

With Carisbrook having a capacity of just over 28,000, McSweeney was confident the test on June 19 would be sold out.

Test rugby returned to Carisbrook in 2008, after a three-year hiatus, when the match between the Springboks and the All Blacks was sold out.

Last year's test against the French was also a sellout.

The Welsh test will be the last to be played at Carisbrook, assuming the new Forsyth Barr Stadium is ready in time for next year's World Cup, and activities will be planned to mark the occasion.

In the past two years, tickets have been sold exclusively for a period to the public in the Highlanders region, south of the Waitaki River.

This year's exclusive offer starts with sales on Sunday at Carisbrook.

Otago All Blacks Ben Smith and Tom Donnelly will help sell the tickets at Carisbrook between 2pm-5pm.

The first 102 people to buy tickets receive a shirt celebrating the last test to be played at Carisbrook.

Test rugby has been played at Carisbrook for 102 years.

Tickets can be bought in the South in the exclusive offer until May 10, when tickets go on sale nationwide.

• The first tickets for next year's Rugby World Cup went on sale yesterday to the New Zealand rugby community.

The team and venue tickets go on sale to the public next Tuesday but members of the rugby community could go online and buy tickets from yesterday.
