Rugby: Otago players deliver for coach

Otago coach Tony Brown was delivered what he ordered.

Before the game, Brown was not talking about payback after last week's heavy loss in the Ranfurly Shield challenge.

He just wanted his side to play well and record a win. That it did as Otago thumped Waikato and picked up its first four-try bonus point of the season.

''It was just a real solid 80 minutes of footy. Everyone playing well, everyone playing to the plan and playing together,'' Brown said.

''It was just simple stuff done well with good energy and good intent.

''I just think it was a hard lesson last week. We had no preparation going into that game and it showed. This week we've had full preparation and the boys delivered.''

Brown said the short turnaround was tough on sides, especially if they were not firing.

''If you are not playing good footy then it is hard to fix anything. We had a poor performance against Northland then a very short turnaround and we have to play Hawkes Bay.

''If you are playing well then it just rolls. But it you are not then it is pretty hard to fix inside three days.''

Brown said the team was mentally on its game and he was proud of its defensive effort..

The game was littered with plenty of kicking - much of it aimless - but Otago won that battle.

''Some of our kicks were poor. But they kicked a lot and you cannot just run everything back. We played really good field position and kept them under pressure. We got some good turnovers from our defence and we made the most of those. I wasn't too upset with the way we kicked but just the execution at times.

''A big work-on was to sort out defence and I thought we did that. You have a full week's preparation, getting mentally and physically right. We have to make sure we do that really well.''

Brown said prop Aki Seiuli, who has played every minute of the season so far, was playing outstanding rugby.

''This year I think he has taken a real step up and obviously you can see on the field he just does not stop.''

Otago has some injury concerns going into the match against Tasman in Nelson next Sunday, after loose forwards James Lentjes (shoulder), Lee Allan (head knock) and hooker Sam Anderson-Heather (ribs) were all forced to leave the field.

A couple of Waikato players may face the judiciary following incidents after Tei Walden scored for Otago and captain Lee Allan was felled in a high tackle, which forced him off the field.

Allan, skippering the side for the first time, said the way Otago played made it an easy job for him. Mentally the team was switched on.

''Obviously, the boys really showed up and were really ready to play. That is all we can ask and that is all we want,''Allan said.

''All the boys led today. I needed some help and the boys really helped me today. The energy was really there and that makes it so much easier.

''We had a good first half but Brownie and Yards [Brown and assistant coach Phil Young] came in and said you can't do half a job and you have to finish it off and we had to do that.''

Allan said it was a thrill for him to captain the side''I grew up in the province and I always dreamed of playing for Otago but I never thought I would ever captain it. Charlie [injured skipper O'Connell] said some good words to me at the start of the week and the boys really helped me out today.''

Waikato captain Brad Weber said his side was off its game throughout and did not fire a shot.

He felt it just showed no team could be taken lightly in this competition.

Weber, who previously played for Otago, said he had made the match into a personal battle and that had hurt him and his side.

''I think my mindset was to prove a point rather than just play the game. I wouldn't have admitted it before the game but a few things I did during the game, like when I dropped the ball close to the line, was about me not the team. It was not to Brownie.

''Being there with all my mates and supporters in front of me, I just really wanted to play well for them. Perhaps I went too individual rather than playing for the team,'' Weber said.
