The New Zealand Rugby Union announced yesterday it was making 12 players from the All Blacks squad available to play the next couple of rounds in the Air New Zealand Cup.
Thomson (26) will be available to play against Hawkes Bay on August 29, at Carisbrook.
He has come off the bench in the past two tests for the All Blacks, though he has only played a few minutes.
Ten players have been released to play for their teams this week and next week.
Those players are: John Afoa, Keven Mealamu and Isaia Toeava (Auckland), Anthony Tuitavaka, Anthony Boric and Rudi Wulf (North Harbour), Stephen Donald and Sione Lauaki (Waikato), and Neemia Tialata and Piri Weepu (Wellington).
Thomson and Southland halfback Jimmy Cowan will be able to play in round five.
With the All Blacks only arriving back from South Africa early on Tuesday, it was felt Thomson would not be ready for Otago's game against Counties-Manukau at Auckland tomorrow night.
The All Blacks play Samoa in New Plymouth on September 3, and then the Wallabies in the final match of the Tri-Nations in Brisbane on September 13.
Under the players' collective agreement, players would have two weeks leave after the Brisbane test.
