Rugby: Otago falls to BOP

Bay of Plenty won a scrappy affair over Otago at Rotorua tonight in an ITM Cup match.

The home side won 31-19 in a match which failed to rise to any heights and was dominated by mistakes and whistle.

The home side took over in the second half against an Otago side which never got out of first gear.

Bay of Plenty won the game in a short five minute period of the second half, scoring 14 points without reply.

Otago replacement flanker TJ Ioane was yellow carded after constant Otago infringing.

Bay of Plenty then pressed and prop Tristan Moran scored.

That was followed shortly afterwards by No 8 Luke Braid going over after Bay of Plenty finally managed to string some phases together and Braid scored after Otago ran out of numbers.

That was game over for Otago, who failed to get anything going on attack and countless times was held up in the maul and forced to turn the ball over.

The first half had 15 penalties dished out by referee Shaun Elliot and not surprisingly there was little continuity.

Bay of Plenty had spells of pressure but could not find the tryline while Otago struggled to get any pace into its game.

Both sides were guilty of going too far in the contact area, and a poor body position when carrying the ball.

Bay of Plenty 31 (Tristan Moran 2, Luke Braid tries; Nick McCashin 2 con, 4 pen) Otago 19 (Tony Ensor try; Hayden Parker con, 4 pen) Halftime: 12-all
