Rugby: Opportunity of lifetime

Sam Anderson-Heather

Sam Anderson-Heather has played only a handful of premier games but the young Dunedin hooker is about to rub shoulders with a whole bunch of All Blacks.

Anderson-Heather (20) left yesterday to join the Classic All Blacks for a whistlestop tour of England and Japan.

He will train and play alongside some of the great names in recent All Black history, including former Otago players Carl Hayman, Anton Oliver, Simon Maling and Tony Brown, former Canterbury inside backs Justin Marshall and Andrew Mehrtens, former Auckland first-five Carlos Spencer and recent World Cup winger Doug Howlett.

Last year's Highlanders captain, Josh Blackie, and former Highlanders Pita Alatini, Ben Blair and Joe McDonnell are also in the team.

The Classic All Blacks play English powerhouse Leicester this weekend and All-Japan in Tokyo on May 31.

Anderson-Heather was initially only going to Tokyo but will now play against Leicester as Oliver, playing for French club Toulon, is unavailable.

The Classic All Blacks, managed by former test lock Andy Haden, have had regular tours and games against New Zealand provincial opposition since 1989.

They always invite a young player to join them.

Anderson-Heather is a member of the Otago Rugby Academy and is on stand-by for the New Zealand Colts for the Under-20 World Cup in Wales in June.
