Members of Parliament will strut their stuff on the rugby field and netball court tomorrow in a fund-raising venture.

The parliamentary rugby team will take on a Dunedin police invitation XV in the curtain-raiser to the North-South game at Forsyth Barr Stadium, while the parliamentary netball side will also face a police team at Unipol.

The parliamentary rugby team will have a mixture of members of Parliament, led by Dunedin list MP Michael Woodhouse, while the netball team should have a full cross-party muster of female MPs.

Mr Woodhouse will be joined by Damien O'Connor (Labour), Brendan Horan (New Zealand First), Alfred Ngaro (National), Paul Goldsmith (National) and Kris Faafoi (Labour).

Eric Roy (National) and Clayton Cosgrove (Labour) will provide the commentary of the rugby match.

In the netball side are Jo Goodhew (National), Nanaia Mahuta (Labour), Claire Curran (Labour), Louise Upston (National), Jackie Blue (National), Katrina Shanks (National), Jan Logie (Greens) and Julie Anne Genter (Greens).

The rugby match will begin at 12.15pm, while the netball game will start at 10.30am.

Mr Woodhouse, a former rugby referee, said the games continued the tradition of the cross-party parliamentary sports teams raising funds for New Zealand charities.

This weekend's charity is Sporting Chance, an Otago-based programme which provides financial assistance to children from disadvantaged circumstances to help them take part in sport.

The rugby side, to be coached by former All Black Richie Guy, will be boosted by parliamentary security and support staff, diplomatic protection members and sponsors.

Also in the team is former All Black Junior Tonu'u, who has long links with the side.

Tonu'u first played for the team in 1998, when he had to play a game to prove his fitness to the All Black selectors. The only game in Auckland that weekend was the parliamentary game, and Tonu'u has played in the fixture ever since.

The rugby match will be refereed by old hands Doug Rodgers, Neal Wallace and Jeff Grubb, and the game will be played under Golden Oldies rules.

A couple of additional rules will also apply, with no kicking outside the 22m lines, apart from penalties and free kicks, while no player may carry the ball more than 10m before passing it.

The game will be played in 15min quarters.

A parliamentary gala will take place tonight at the Southern Cross Hotel to help raise funds for the Sporting Chance charity.

MPs will be present to watch the test between Ireland and the All Blacks and there will be an auction at halftime.
