Rugby: Key trio if NZ is to win fifth cup in a row

The Black Ferns kick off their tilt for a fifth straight World Cup in France tonight. Rugby writer Steve Hepburn looks at three key players who can help the side win the title.

Selica Winiata (fullback)

The Manawatu police constable has one thing which cannot be coached - pace.

Winiata is a livewire at fullback for the Black Ferns. She adds real impetus to the backline when she comes into the line and can also be a tiger on defence. Scored a fantastic try for the Black Ferns in their last-gasp win over England last year. It was voted try of the year by New Zealand rugby fans.

Winiata has been around for a while now but age does not appear to be slowing her. Her ability to pop up all round the field will be a big asset, especially in the women's game where the New Zealand side's ability to spark something from unbroken play may be a the key difference.

Kelly Brazier (first five-eighth)

Brazier was an important player for the Black Ferns when they won the last World Cup in England. She was just a teenager back then but had plenty of rugby nous and athletic ability.

The Otago playmaker has to use the strength and speed of those outside her. Has struggled with a hip injury for the past few months but has finally got through it, and performed well in the home series just completed in the North Island. With games bound to be tight in the knockout stages, her ability to kick goals will be vital for the side.

Fiao'o Fa'amausili (hooker)

The Black Ferns captain will want to follow in the shoes of Farah Palmer, another Black Ferns hooker who got to lift up the World Cup trophy.

Fa'amausili has been around for a good while now, making her debut 12 years ago, so has plenty of experience.

The European teams have been working hard on the set piece so it will be tough for the Black Ferns up front, which may be their Achilles heel. Fa'amausili will have to use all her experience and guile to make sure the side has enough ball.

Her throwing in to what is not an overly tall New Zealand lineout is going to be crucial, as the Black Ferns will need to be make the most of any ball that comes their way.
