Joseph is coming to the end of his two-year deal to coach the Highlanders, having signed on for the 2011 and 2012 seasons, and he is unsure whether he wants to get involved again with the New Zealand Maori side.
The New Zealand Rugby Union announced last week the New Zealand Maori would be making an end-of-year tour to the northern hemisphere.
The opposition for the Maori side has yet to be confirmed for the tour but NZRU chief executive Steve Tew said last week the matches would probably be against club sides or amalgamated sides.
Joseph said he had not given much thought to coaching the Maori side or extending his Highlanders contract.
Joseph was the coach of New Zealand Maori the last time it played, in 2010, when it took on Ireland and England in separate internationals, winning both games. He is no longer contracted to the NZRU to coach the team.
If he does take on the Maori job he is unlikely to be around when the Highlanders start pre-season training for next season.
Joseph said he was really only looking at the current Highlanders season and had not given much thought past the game against the Crusaders this Friday night.
"The season for us comes to a bit of conclusion after Friday night and then we will have a month away. So that may be a time to have a look at things," he said.
He said it was not his intention to go anywhere but said it was pretty hard to make a comment on his future, as the focus of the whole team was centred on the game against the Crusaders.
Along with the season coming to a climax, Joseph also had to start building his team for next year.
But he said every franchise was in the same boat and just had to work through things.
The deals of assistant coaches Kieran Keane and Simon Culhane are also coming to an end.
Joseph said none of the coaching team had talked about their own futures.
Locking up Joseph for another year should be top priority for Highlanders general manager Roger Clark.
It seems inconceivable the Highlanders would let Joseph go especially as he has turned around the franchise which was in the doldrums for years before he arrived.
The team will have its first full training run today before the crunch match against the Crusaders in Christchurch on Friday night.
It was a somewhat messy week with those players in the All Black training squad not re-joining the side until today.
The match against the Crusaders will be refereed by Steve Walsh.
