The number of candidates for the position of Otago coach is down to half a dozen, with the interview process kicking off yesterday.

The Otago coaching job became vacant after coach Steve Martin came to the end of his three-year contract and the Otago Rugby Football Union advertised the position, despite Martin wishing to continue in the role.

Applications closed late last month, and ORFU chief executive Richard Reid said a short-list had been drawn up containing about half a dozen names.

Interviews started yesterday and would continue today and into next week.

Reid declined to say who was being interviewed, but it was believed Martin and Bruce Carvell, his assistant this year, were interviewed yesterday.

Former Otago captain David Latta confirmed he was due to be interviewed today.

Latta said yesterday it was good there was interest in the job as it showed people still cared about Otago rugby.

Former Otago assistant coach Phil Young was to be interviewed later in the week.

Young said he wanted to be the head coach of Otago, after already being assistant coach of the side.

He had coached Southland for four years.

Interviews continuing into next week suggests North Otago coach Mike Mullins is also in the running.

Mullins, who is in Japan with the North Otago side, has said he will apply for the job.

Others believed to be in the race include Otago development coaches Andrew Hunter and Brett McCormack and Alhambra Union premier coach Mike Moeahu.

Reid hoped the coach would be named by as the end of next week, though no firm date had been set.

Otago finished 10th in the Air New Zealand Cup last season.

The full-time position is for next year only, as possible changes to the Super 14 may lead to a modified Air NZ Cup in 2010.
