A South Otago rugby player left with 130 stitches in his leg after a rucking incident is "gutted" an Otago Rugby Football Union investigation has found no-one responsible.
Luke Wilson has also indicated he may pursue legal action for what he claims was a deliberate attack.
Wilson (27), a fullback for the Crescent senior team, required more than four hours of surgery at Dunedin Hospital after the incident in a game against Owaka on April 9.
The ORFU yesterday said it had "thoroughly investigated" the incident and could take no further action.
"Players from both sides in the match, the referee and spectators have been interviewed but it is not possible to identify any individual or individuals who may have been responsible," chief executive Richard Reid said.
"We have been in constant touch with the injured player and he understands the process we have had to go through. Clearly, an injury of this nature is of serious concern to all whose responsibility centres on the good of the game and the welfare of its players.
"But until we have suitable evidence, we have no basis on which to take the matter further. If circumstances change, we will take it further."
Wilson told the Otago Daily Times he was shocked the investigation led to a dead end.
"I'm pretty gutted about it. Real gutted," he said yesterday. "Someone out there has done this and all he had to do was come forward and admit it. They're saying no-one's done it but, of course, someone did."
Wilson would not comment on the possibility of pursuing legal action but said he was "looking into my options".
