History suggests the Highlanders will win in Invercargill on Saturday night - they have never lost to the Cheetahs.

The side has a poor record against most other South African teams since 2006, when the competition expanded to 14 teams, but against the Cheetahs it has been one-way traffic.

The sides first clashed in 2006 when the Cheetahs came into the competition - the Highlanders won 17-12 in Bloemfontein.

They have been in the winner's circle since, seven straight victories, although there have been many close wins.

In Bloemfontein in 2008, the Highlanders won 31-28 and, in Dunedin in 2011, they won 24-21 in one of the last matches played at Carisbrook.

Last year, the Highlanders at one stage trailed the home team 30-9 but three quick tries put them back into the game.

Then, to show the rugby gods really are on the Highlanders' side, Cheetahs replacement goalkicker Sias Elberson missed a straightforward penalty attempt in front of the posts with time all but up.

The Highlanders then swept down the field and Chris Noakes banged over a long-range penalty attempt to win the game.

The Highlanders' biggest win was in 2009, when they won 32-8 at Carisbrook.

However, the other South African teams have met with more success.

The Highlanders have lost to the Sharks the past six times they have played them, and the Stormers have won the past five encounters between the sides. The Highlanders have beaten the Bulls in the past two games, but before that had lost five matches on the trot.

Even the woeful and now relegated Lions had a 50% win rate against the Highlanders in their six most recent encounters.

The Highlanders will not play the Stormers this season.
