A Highlanders rugby player could face criminal charges after allegedly being involved in a street fight in Dunedin's city centre.
No charges have been laid but Dunedin police confirmed an investigation is under way into an incident, and they were talking to two people.
It is believed the player was involved in a scuffle in Bath St at 4am last Saturday, after the Highlanders recorded their first win of the season against the Lions at Carisbrook.
Highlanders chief executive Richard Reid confirmed there was ‘‘an issue'' with one of the players.
‘‘This has to work its way through the legal system and I'm not going to speculate on where it's going,'' Mr Reid said yesterday.
‘‘Clearly, the police are now determining just what has gone on and who has been involved.
‘‘We'll co-operate with them as much as we can and this will take its course.'
Mr Reid said he believed only one Highlander was allegedly involved.
- The Highlanders were beaten 19-17 by the second-placed Sharks at Carisbrook last night, after leading 17-11 at halftime.
The result gave the Highlanders their seventh bonus point from eight games.
