Former All Black Carl Hayman may play on next season but it will be a short-term stint.

Hayman announced earlier this month he is hanging up his boots at the end of the French club season.

The tighthead prop has been playing in France since 2010 and is the captain of the powerhouse Toulon club.

In an email to the Otago Daily Times, Hayman said there was a possibility he may play next season, although in a limited role.

Hayman said he was in talks with Toulon to play for the club during the World Cup as a World Cup ''Joker'' at the start of next season.

During World Cups, some competitions around the world, such as the French Top 14 league, let players into squads to cover for players who are away at the tournament.

With Toulon packed full of stars likely to be on international duty, Hayman (35) will bring some valuable experience to the club for the six weeks the World Cup is on.

If he does sign a short-term deal with Toulon he will then finish playing at the end of pool play at the World Cup in mid-October.

Hayman said he had no plans after that.

His former All Black team-mate and current clubmate, lock Ali Williams, announced his retirement from all rugby last week.

Toulon has an ageing squad and will be looking to boost its resources before the start of the season.

All Black second five-eighth Ma'a Nonu is moving to the club after the World Cup.
