Rugby: French give South the cold shoulder

France is playing its first test in Dunedin but the side is not going to spend much time enjoying the southern hospitality.

Like the Springboks team last year, the French will spend just four days in Dunedin, preferring to stay in windy Wellington, than venture south.

But the All Blacks are not as shy and will spend a full week in Dunedin, preparing for their first test of the season.

Otago Rugby Football Union marketing manager Chris Green said France had confirmed the test side would arrive in Dunedin on Thursday, just two days before the match, and then fly out again on Sunday.

The test is to be played on June 13.

The French team will be based in Wellington throughout its two-match tour, with the second test in the capital city a week after the game at Carisbrook.

Green said it was disappointing the French team did not want to spend more time in the South.

"There is a preconceived view of what it's going to be like down here," Green said, referring to Dunedin's chilly winter reputation.

"I would have thought we were a pretty hospitable group of people in the South but a lot of teams are doing this now."

South African Super 14 teams have also spent limited time in the South in past years.

Green said community events involving the All Blacks were being organised.
