Rugby: Dumping leaves Tasman with point to prove

Former Otago B player and Tasman captain Andrew Goodman believes the side's axing from the top tier of provincial rugby will lead to his side going out this season to prove a few people wrong.

Goodman (25), originally from Nelson but a student at the University of Otago for five years, said it was obviously disappointing the side had been cut from the Air New Zealand Cup.

Fresh from an upset away win over Waikato, Tasman was now targeting Taranaki on Sunday in its first game in Nelson.

Goodman, who played for Southern in Dunedin, said the side had been focusing on the rugby and the off-the-field issues were best left to other people.

"Our attitude will not change. We still want to go out and win every game. Hopefully, we can go out and prove a few people wrong," he said.

When there was a game in either Nelson or Blenheim, there was a real vibe around the town, which would be missed if no top rugby came to the area.

Tasman, burdened by a $4 million debt, was receiving financial assistance from the New Zealand Rugby Union to compete in the competition.

Northland coach Mark Anscombe said his players were ignoring what was happening off the field, preferring to control what was happening on it.

Anscombe told the Otago Daily Times before the announcement his team was cut from next year's competition, the team had not thought about the possibility of Northland not being in the competition next year.

"We are concerned with the job at hand and that is playing rugby. The team does not think about it," Anscombe said.

"The guys have futures to play for. Be it to make it into a Super 14 side or the chance to play for another union."
