Rugby: Decision on World Cup quarterfinals next week

The organisers of the 2011 World Cup in New Zealand will announce next week which venues have secured the quarterfinals and third-fourth play-off matches, but Dunedin's name will not be among them.

Rugby New Zealand 2011 Ltd will make the announcement on Thursday in Wellington following a final board meeting.

Dunedin has not applied to hold a quarterfinal as the criterion set for World Cup organisers was that the stadium would have to have a capacity of more than 35,000.

Neither Carisbrook, where just more than 29,000 squeezed into the sell-out test against South Africa last month, nor the Awatea St stadium, with a proposed capacity of 30,170, is big enough to hold a quarterfinal match.

Auckland, already guaranteed the final and semifinals, has also bid for the quarterfinals and the third-fourth match.

Christchurch and Wellington have also applied to host quarterfinals.

Auckland and Hamilton have bid for the third-fourth clash between the losing semifinalists.

Auckland has proposed either Eden Park or North Harbour Stadium as a venue for that match.

Eden Park has previously been selected to host the final and both semifinals.

Organisers of the southern region bid are concentrating on trying to get an All Black pool game.

Bids have to be with Rugby New Zealand by the end of October.

Decision on pool venues will be made in April next year with location of team bases due by the end of next year.
