Rugby writer Steve Hepburn picks five rookies who could have an impact in the Super rugby competition this year.

Jimmy Cowan
(Blues)

Sure he is not really a rookie but it is a new beginning for the lad from Mataura.

In a new town and new team, Cowan could emerge as the key man for the Blues who have too much youth in their inside backs.

And who knows, play well for the Blues, and is a black jersey in the offing ?Bryce Heem(Chiefs)Heem has been floating around for a while in the New Zealand sevens side and for the Tasman team.

But this is his first chance at Super rugby level and he will look to make an impact. The Chiefs have some serious firepower in their backline and Heem will want to profit from the good work of those inside him.

Willis Halaholo
(Hurricanes)

If it all goes right for the Hurricanes then Halaholo should not get much of a look-in. But life never works out to plan, so chances are Halaholo will get a run or two. Appears to have the knack of running around and through players, and scoring tries at the right time. Might need to work on defence.

Codie Taylor
(Crusaders)

With Corey Flynn leaving the Crusaders after what seems like an eternity, an opening has presented itself for hookers.

Taylor has always looked like he has the ingredients - pace, size and skill - but he needs to get rid of niggly injuries and stay on the park.

If he does, will he become another cog in the Crusaders machine?

Alex Ainley
(Highlanders)

You are never too late to be a first-timer at this level and Ainley, at 33, is having his first taste.

The Highlanders have four competent locks and Ainley will have to make the most of any chance.

But the Tasman man is a hardened campaigner, will not die wondering and will go toe-to-toe with any opponent.
