Otago will play four pre-season matches and also have an internal trial before it kicks off its provincial campaign.

Not one of the pre-season games is to be played at Carisbrook, with the side travelling around the South Island.

Otago will be keen to hit the ground running in this year's Air New Zealand Cup, as it faces Wellington in a Ranfurly Shield challenge in the capital in the first round on July 31.

Assistant coach Bruce Carvell said a good pre-season was vital and four games was much better than the two games the team had last year.

A trial will take place at Molyneux Park, Alexandra, on June 16, with the trial teams due to be named early next week.

The first two warm-up matches are against unions from the Heartland championship.

Otago will play North Otago at Oamaru on July 1 and will then head to Ashburton on July 11 to take on Mid Canterbury.

Otago will play Tasman in Nelson on July 18, with the match at 12.15pm so the southern team can return to Dunedin later that day.

Otago's final warm-up match will be against Southland in Invercargill on July 24, starting at 5.30pm.

Last year Otago only had warm-up matches against Southland and Wellington, again both away, and the coaching staff wanted more games this year.

Otago has not started formally training together although a squad, not including Super 14 players, had been training at least once a week for the majority of the club season.

Young University A lock Josh Townsend has had a wretched run with injuries.

He had a slow start to the season after recovering from a knee operation and returned to full fitness, playing 40 minutes for his club side.

But he broke his foot in a training accident late last month and is likely to be out for another month.

University A loose forward and captain Brad Cameron broke his jaw and elbow in a club game last weekend and will be out for at least a month.

Former rugby league players Michael Witt and Ryan Shortland, who are both playing for Taieri after heading south in the off-season, have also been training with the group.

Otago players will not be available for the last three weeks of the club season.

More than 200 tickets to the test between France and the All Blacks were sold yesterday and just under 1400 tickets remain for the test at Carisbrook on June 13.
