As the 60 invited guests were split into teams of three, one past or present All Black was assigned to each team and they hopped into their golf carts and started to make their way around the expansive course, just as the skies opened.
However, a little rain wasn't enough to dampen the spirits of participants - some of whom were proficient with the club and tiny white ball, while others were less so.
Rumour had it at least 30 balls went missing on one particular hole, but one bright orange ball, which belonged to Dunedin-based All Black Adam Thomson and his team, including Otago Daily Times rugby writer Stephen Hepburn, made it around the course.
While Thomson, for some reason, refused to be in a photo with the orange ball, it may have helped his team finish first equal with halfback Piri Weepu's.
Each team member took home a digital photo frame and a Steinlager bag.
Two All Blacks who were more intent on having fun than winning were Scott Waldrom and Ross Filipo.
Waldrom found a "team mascot" fairly early on in the form of an animal skull which he placed on the dashboard of his cart, while Filipo was quick to admit he wasn't much of a golfer, before trying to convince a reporter his name was actually "Mils".
As teams started to disband, with several All Blacks leaving early to attend the New Zealand Rugby Awards in Auckland last night, the rain stopped and the welcoming fires inside the clubhouse started calling.
