There was an extra stride in the step of the Highlanders' players yesterday and with good reason.

On the sidelines were All Black selectors Wayne Smith and Steve Hansen, along with All Black manager Darren Shand and strength and conditioning coach Nic Gill.

Head coach Graham Henry has just returned from overseas and did not make the trip south.

Shand said the trip was the result of a commitment by All Black management to visit each franchise twice during the season.

They would be at training again today.

The All Black coaching team had already visited the Hurricanes and the Blues and would visit the Crusaders next week before finishing off with the Chiefs later next month.

They would meet some players individually to discuss form and different parts of their game.

Shand said it was part of the process to check on the fitness of players and make sure they were not too overdone when they reported for the test season.

They would also meet Highlanders coaches Jamie Joseph, Kieran Keane and Simon Culhane to talk over the season so far.

Shand said he could not confirm the All Blacks test scheduled for July 22 would be played at Forsyth Barr Stadium, though he said it was an impressive stadium.

The national union was still working through where the game would be played, he said.
