Otago put on a poor defensive display to be soundly beaten by Wellington in a Mitre 10 Cup match in the capital today.

Wellington won 54-24 after it led 35-5 at halftime today.

Wellington won the gain line battle with ease and Otago dropped off far too many tackles.

The home team was too strong with the ball in hand and Otago scored a try at the end to get a bonus point, which it hardly deserved.

Wellington 54 (Wes Goosen 3, Alex Fidow 2, Peter Umaga-Jensen, Kemara Hauiti-Parapara, Ben Lam tries; Trent Renata 7 con)

Otago 24 (Henry Purdy, Michael Collins, Aleki Morris-Lome, Mika Mafi tries; Josh Ioane 2 con)

Halftime: 35-5
