Matatu ready for Hurricanes onslaught

An Otago stalwart and one of the world's best are in line for their first Super Rugby Aupiki starts.

Long-time Otago Spirit star Greer Muir will wear the No 8 jersey for Matatu in its final game, against the Hurricanes tomorrow in Hamilton.

She comes into the starting team after being in the reserves the past two games.

It forces a reshuffle in the loose forward trio, as captain Alana Bremner moves back to blindside flanker.

Elsewhere, halfback Kendra Cocksedge will make her first appearance and brings a world-class presence at the base.

She will link with No10 Terauoriwa Gapper, who replaces Arabella McKenzie in the only other change.

They are changes the team will hope propels it to its first win.

Coach Blair Baxter admitted it had not been happy with its performance in Thursday night's 21-10 loss to the Blues.

Its forward pack had scrapped well, but was ultimately overpowered by a big Blues pack up front.

"We definitely showed grit. We're a tight group and we care deeply for each other. They're never going to die wondering or give up and they'll fight forever.

"There's areas of the game we weren't as good as we know we can be. Our pack didn't play how they wanted to play.

"There's been a bit of work go in this week and I know they're hurting and want to produce a quality performance."

It will be Matatu's fourth game in two weeks — including a pre-season match — and Baxter said there were plenty of sore bodies.

However, recovery had been a focus and there was plenty of excitement that outweighed that.

It was the team's last chance to play together and it would face a Hurricanes team coming off a loss to the Chiefs.

"They'll definitely improve as well," Baxter said.

"That was their first hit out together. I expect them to be similar to the Blues.

"They'll want to use their heavy pack, but they've also got that exciting, quite direct backline, some big midfielders and some fast outside backs, [and] a lot of mana in their leader in Sarah Hirini.

"They're a threat across the park, like the other two teams. We think we've got a good plan to stop all that and play the way we want to play.''

The Hurricanes were unable to provide a team yesterday.

It will be released at 9am today.

The game kicks off at 5.05pm and will be followed by the Blues v Chiefs.
