The top two sides in the Otago premier schools competition consolidated their spots at the top of the standings at the weekend.

John McGlashan College and King's High School remain unbeaten after five games.

McGlashan beat a tenacious Waitaki Boys' High School 22-0 at home, while King's thrashed Taieri College 54-14 on its home turf.

The showdown between the two schools is still two weeks away. King's will have the home advantage.

While McGlashan will be looking forward to that match, it will have to polish its game.

The defending champion will be very pleased to have kept Waitaki scoreless. But it was guilty of blowing opportunities on attack and would have liked to have picked up at least one more try to secure the bonus point.

''I thought we were a little bit one-dimensional in many ways but the ground conditions made it tough,'' McGlashan rugby director Mike Idour said.

''And they defended very well. That is what we are finding this year - that all the teams are defending very well. They all have defensive systems and you have to try different things to break through.''

It was midway through the first spell before McGlashan cracked Waitaki's defence. It scored a second try before the break to lead 17-0.

Waitaki did not let up on defence in the second half and appeared on track to keep a clean sheet for the final half until the home team scored late in the match through replacement hooker Sam Engelbrecht. He galloped 20m down the blindside to score the best try of the match.

Captain Reon Lowery had another strong game in the front row and also scored a try, while Hunter Cleland was accurate with the boot again.

For Waitaki, prop Peter Armstrong showed his strength in the tight phases, and lock Lachie Mee got through a power of work.

In the other matches, Otago Boys' High School 2nd XV beat Dunstan High School 48-7 at Hancock Park, South Otago High School dispatched St Kevin's College 40-14 in Balclutha and Mt Aspiring College beat Kavanagh College 62-0.
