Only two games were played as Maheno and Kurow had a bye. They will make up the game at King’s Birthday Weekend, as part of Kurow’s 125th anniversary celebrations.
Valley remains unbeaten after a 35-12 win over Athletic Marist, and Excelsior extended its winning streak to four games after beating Old Boys 26-22.
Excelsior opened the match strongly, crossing the line in the opening five minutes through winger Josefa Vurewa.
Midfielder Matia Qiolevu beat his defender and was able to pop the ball inside to his man in support.
Old Boys tied the game up not long after, as Blues gave away back-to-back penalties to put them in great field position.
Blues remained patient in their attack and were able to crack the Old Boys defence through the electric Qiolevu.
It was a dominant patch for Blues, who spent the majority of the first half hot on attack deep in Old Boys territory.
But when they could not take a clearance kick cleanly, Sione Finau was able to scoop the ball up and scamper away down field.
He then threw the pass to Welshman Will Clapham who had enough pace to score in the corner for Old Boys.
Excelsior was able to extend the lead just before the half as prop Hika Taikato burrowed his way over on a pick and go.
The second half was an arm wrestle and it took over 20 minutes before the first points were scored.
That was thanks to a Blues lineout drive that was executed to perfection and saw Metuisela Seuta fall over for the five-pointer.
At this stage, Blues looked to pull away but they could not get out of their own way. Penalty after penalty kept allowing Old Boys back into their 22m.
They scored two late tries in a spirited effort in the final quarter, but Excelsior took the win.
Tyron Davies had a blinder from halfback and was able to steer the forwards around the park as well as carve off easy metres with his big box kick.
On the main field, Valley kept its commanding lead atop the Citizens Shield standings, recording a fifth straight win with a bonus point.
Athies started the match strongly and opened the scoring after just three minutes with midfielder Malakai Tabau dotting down.
The teams then traded seven-pointers and Athies looked to take a 12-7 lead into the sheds before Valley was awarded a 5m scrum.
From there, a dominant push marched the Athies pack back and No 8 Cameron Rowland scored an easy try.
It was one-way traffic as Valley ran in 21 unanswered points in the second half to secure the 35-12 win.
Valley’s forwards again starred. Meli Kolinisau, in the front row, and Rowland stood out.
The 9-10 pairing of Jake Matthews and Isaac Clunie is proving to be one of the best in the competition.
