Our Southern XV of the club season

Francis Parker names a team of the season from the Southern Region premier club competition.

15. Logan Wilson (Clutha Valley). Moved to the custodian role left vacant by his brother. Safe under the high ball and always a feature in Valley’s hot counter-attack.

14. Junior Meafua (Clutha). Scored 12 tries. His last-minute winner against old foe Crescent in front of the home faithful will be a highlight of the season.

13. Jonny Sargent (Clutha Valley). Finished with a man-of-the-match performance in the final at Outram. A strong carrier and extremely solid on defence.

12. Chase Owen (Crescent). A leader of men. The glue in the Crescent backline who always had time and space to make correct decisions.

11. William Casey (Clutha). A season to remember for one of Clutha’s most versatile players. Debuted at fullback, played in the midfield, on the wing, and started at first five in their semifinal.

10. Thomas Johnson (Clutha Valley). Class personified. A true first five who played his role to perfection. Took on defenders and put his outside men through gaps.

9. Jared Edwards (Clutha Valley). Combined exceptionally well with his halves partner and directed the team around flawlessly. Deadly around the ruck and so strong on defence.

8. Kael Merrett (Clutha). Uncompromising ball runner who had a breakout season. Has energy and enthusiasm in droves.

7. Jake Lyders (Lawrence). Stepped into a leadership role this season. Hugely competitive at the breakdown and an elusive ball runner. Capable of shifting bodies on defence too.

6. Ben Witt (Clinton). Ten tries and a hundred defenders beaten. A strong runner with a nose for the tryline.

5. Damian Wilson (Clutha Valley). Another captain’s knock. Elusive ball runner and accurate at set piece. Leads by example every week. Eleven tries to his name.

4. Tyler Brouwer (Crescent). Never retreated on defence, sound at the set piece, and always willing to carry for his side.

3. Ethan Hippolite (West Taieri). Set piece fiend. Strong carrier, big ticker. A leader in the West Taieri tight five.

2. David Matsas (Clutha Valley). Strong carrier with an eye for a tidy lineout. Hard to stop in the outside channels.

1. Daniel Miller (Owaka). Best prop in the competition bar none. Pillar of strength at set piece and a huge engine which allows him to carry strongly for the full 80.

Reserves: Sam Wyber (Lawrence), Oceania Ioane (Crescent), Chris Preddy (Owaka), Kace Shaw (Crescent), Conor Lawson (West Taieri), Eli Ellison (West Taieri), Josh Huddleston (Owaka), Dej Kane (Toko).
