The former Highlander and All Black returned to Miller Park to play his 50th match for his beloved Green Island club.
It notched a 35-12 win over Kaikorai, as Smith earned his blazer in front of a big crowd on the club’s heritage day.
Smith (35), who now plays in Japan’s top league, last played for Green Island in 2012.
He said he had always intended to return to play his 50th match. It was just a case of finding the right time.
"Hopefully, I passed on a bit of what I’ve learnt and hopefully, they took something out of today," Smith said.
"I really enjoyed playing alongside the guys in the Green Island team.
"There’s some really good buggers in there that enjoy their footy.
"It was no different to when I was 18, 19 years old and trying to cut my teeth in rugby."
Smith was unsure if he would appear in Green Island colours again.
Family life was now a big responsibility and he had to look after his body, now that he was "not getting any younger".
However, he said club rugby still held much of what was good about the sport.
"In club rugby, sometimes it’s lost in moving on to the professional game, but for me club rugby’s where it all starts.
"It’s where you get a lot of enjoyment.
"It’s where you get a good balance between playing footy, getting into the club rooms , sharing a drink with your team mates.
"You get a really good experience through club footy, right from a young age."
