Simon Smith has jumped into a much bigger pond — although it turns out he is still the same-sized fish.

The Dunstan Arms rower has claimed four titles at the United States masters national championships in San Francisco.

He won both the singles and doubles sculls gold medals in the B (36 years and over) and C (43 years and over) grades.

In the B single final, he rowed an impressive 3min 38.28sec to claim a one-length victory.

In the C single, he rowed a slower 3min 46.79sec, but was three lengths clear of his nearest rival. In the doubles, he combined with American Julian Geluk to claim two and one-length victories in the B and C finals respectively. The faster of the two times came in the C grade, the duo finishing in 3min 28.03sec.

More than 1600 athletes from 103 clubs competed at the event on Lake Merritt, not far from the University of California, Berkeley.

Smith has long been a dominant force on the New Zealand masters scene. It is not just in the masters division that Smith has excelled, though. He claimed third in the senior single sculls at this year’s national championships.
