Veteran trotter Trick Star defied his age when sprinting to a deserved win at Oamaru yesterday.

The Brent White-trained trotter showed too much dash for his rivals with a passing-lane win in race 5.

The horse is just days away from turning 11, but that does not mean retirement is on the agenda just yet.

"So long as he can keep running placings we will keep him going," White said.

"He has got a little bit of wear and tear but he is pretty good, really."

It was White’s first win from his new base at the Ashburton racecourse. He previously trained at Temuka.

"It could get pretty wet at the property, and I have got family around Ashburton.

"Mikayla Lewis, who was working for me, left to work for Barry Purdon, so it’s going to be easier to get staff there.

"There was a nice big barn there and there’s three tracks to work on."

Canterbury driver Grant Ross won his first and possibly last race as a driver with Clive yesterday.

Ross was having just his third race drive behind the pacer in a 2600m mobile race restricted to junior drivers.

It had been his ambition to win a race and now he had done so  Ross "could retire happy",  he said.

Ross  had held a trials licence for the past six seasons but had only recently considered stepping up to driving at the races. It was Clive’s seventh win for  Broadfield trainer Don Ross, Grant’s father.

• Taramakau Reactor made an impressive start to his racing career when winning race 4.

It was game over for his rivals when trainer-driver Leo O’Reilly took the Auckland Reactor gelding to the lead in the first lap of the race.

Taramakau Reactor might not be sighted in New Zealand again as he could be sold to overseas interests.

• Oamaru trainer Phil Williamson sealed his fourth consecutive Otago trainers’ premiership on his home track yesterday.

Williamson trained his 30th winner of the season when Taieri Miss won race 1 to clear maiden ranks.

Westwood Beach trainer Graeme Anderson finished runner-up to Williamson with 25 wins.

Matthew Williamson had a commanding lead in the Otago drivers’ premiership  going  into yesterday’s meeting.

His tally of 83 was 36 wins clear of his brother, Brad, who drove Taieri Miss to victory.

Charlotte Purvis was confirmed as Otago’s leading junior driver with her 14 wins for the season.

Purvis helped Waikouaiti trainer Denis O’Connell score a career highlight in race 8.

O’Connell scored his first quinella as a trainer when Aveross Ferrari beat Alexy.

Purvis drove Alexy who was denied by his stablemate, driven by Sarah O’Reilly, by a neck.

Blair Orange’s phenomenal season in the sulky came to an end at Oamaru yesterday.

Orange set the record for driving wins in a season at 232.

Dexter Dunn held the previous record of 229.

Matt Anderson finished the season on 43 wins to win the national junior drivers’ premiership.

Mark Purdon and Natalie Rasmussen won the  national trainers’ premiership with 122 wins.
