Timaru horseman Graeme Telfer has two strong chances to notch his best season as a trainer at Oamaru tomorrow.

Telfer lines up Boomer Bailey in tomorrow’s feature pace and Red Hot Poker in the feature trot.

Six of Boomer Bailey’s 12 career wins have come at Oamaru.

Four have been on its all-weather track and two have been on the grass.

Exactly why the horse has done so well at Oamaru racecourse is a mystery to the trainer but he suspects it may have nothing to do the surroundings.

"I think it is just [driver] Dexter Dunn . . . I can’t think of anything else,"  Telfer said.

Dunn and Boomer Bailey were just pipped by Si Si Sinor in the Ashburton Winter Cup two weeks ago.

Boomer Bailey began very quickly and is likely to make light work of his 35m handicap again tomorrow.

He faces a slightly weaker line-up than than he did at Ashburton, which makes him the horse to beat in race 3.

Should the veteran win, it would take his trainer to a career-best tally of eight wins for the season.

Telfer notched seven wins last season.

Boomer Bailey has won three races this term and has shown no signs of slowing down as he approaches his 125th start.

Telfer credits that to  training and racing the horse extensively on grass.

"He should have his best year ever this year," he said.

"He has been working on the grass and I suppose half of his races [have been]  on the grass. If he was in a big stable I suppose he would be worked on the grit all of the time."

Donegal Carrickfin’s solid recent  form makes him one of Boomer Bailey’s main rivals tomorrow.

Forbury Park claimers’ series winner Four Starzzz Shiraz is another strong contender for the race.

Red Hot Poker has the talent to win race 5, but comes into the race under a cloud.

The horse was treated for stomach ulcers after his disappointing effort for eighth in his last start at Ashburton.

"I am not sure about him. He was treated for stomach ulcers the other day, so I am just not sure where he is at," Telfer said.

"If he was right he could probably win that."

Dunn will also drive Red Hot Poker.

The sometimes wayward and sometimes brilliant The Dominator looks the horse to beat in race 5.

He has been on his best behaviour in his last two starts at Addington where he has won and run second.

Last-start Forbury Park winner Pyramid Magic looks a strong each-way contender in the race.
