Status of pair on line

Promising pacers Pembrook Playboy and See Ya Write are set to fight it out to determine Southland's leading male 3yr-old pacer at Ascot Park today.

The question of who that is could not be fully answered when See Ya Write nosed Pembrook Playboy out of second placing when they met for their first time during a dramatic race at Wyndham 12 days ago.

Winner Diamond Party ran off the track at the end of the race, which meant the Southland pair had to take evasive action.

Though his horse had to settle for third, trainer-driver Nathan Williamson saw enough to think Pembrook Playboy can beat See Ya Write when they clash in race 8 today.

"See Ya Write is probably our main opposition and we gave him a good three-length start before the turn and we were going past him when we got checked. So unless we have gone backwards since then or he has gone forward then hopefully the pecking order is just the same."

Pembrook Playboy gave See Ya Write a head start in the later stages of the Wyndham race as he did not show enough gate-speed to press forward.

The tactics Williamson adopts at the start of today's 2200m race will depend on how his 3yr-old feels behind the mobile gate.

"He chased the gate out in his first two starts back, but he was just a bit lethargic when he was scoring up last time, so it will just depend on how he feels [today]."

See Ya Write was far from disgraced on a sticky Wyndham track. The Des Baynes-trained pacer could get another head start on his main rival after drawing inside Pembrook Playboy.

See Ya Write could also strip fitter for his last start as it was just his second run of his 3yr-old campaign.

The pacer produced arguably the maiden win of the Southland season when dismantling a quality line-up in the first start of his campaign at Ascot Park on October 20.

The Southland pairing of See Ya Write and Pembrook Playboy should not have today's race completely to themselves. They will clash with talented Canterbury 3yr-olds Burnham Boy and Silent Major.
