Racing: Pitman surges to clear lead

Trainer Michael Pitman extended his tally for holiday racing to 20 wins with the successes of Our Genes, Sub Prime and Night Life at Reefton yesterday.

He has taken a clear lead in the trainers' premiership with 47 wins.

His tally last season was 42.

He won the premiership in 2007-2008 with 86 wins, a personal best.

Our Genes gave Pitman his fourth Reefton Cup win when ridden by stable apprentice Amelia Denby.

The 8yr-old Our Genes is raced by Pitman's sons, Jonathon and Matthew on lease from Jim Bruford, of Auckland.

Pitman has also won the Reefton Cup with Honour Bright (1990), Seagers (1992) and Four Saints (1995).

Our Genes, who prevailed over 1400m yesterday is set to back up over 1150m in a $17,000 race at Kumara on Saturday.

The 8yr-old Generous gelding has been re-handicapped 1kg to 58kg.

Sub Prime and Night Life are also engaged at Kumara.

Sub Prime is up 1kg to 59kg and Night Life up 2kg to 56.5kg.

Sub Prime, leased by Michael Pitman, had won at Waikouaiti on Saturday.

Pitman has Borninthestates (Jamie Bullard), Coup Callum (Daniel Stackhouse) and Peyow Peyow ( Brittany Moore) in the $30,000 Kumara Nuggets (1810m), the feature race at Kumara.

He has settled on the Gore Guineas on January 22 as the next start for his rising star, Milo.

The Coats Choice gelding, owned by John and Evelyn Carran, is in line to amass some $200,000 including bonuses if successful in the Gore, Dunedin and Southland Guineas.
