Texican set a New Zealand record for a 3yr-old when he won over 3200m in 4.05.5 at Winton yesterday.

Texican took 0.1sec off the record set by Bettor's Strike at Waterlea in June, 2008. Texican is trained by Cran Dalgety, who also prepared Bettor's Strike.

Texican, owned by Jim and Susan Wakefield, of Christchurch, has won eight of his 16 starts and $179,292 in stakes this season.

Tact Hayleys Delight set a NZ record for a mare when she won in 2.56.7 for 2400m (mobile). She was 0.3sec inside the record set by Blossom Lady in 1991 and equalled by Natal Franco in 2010.

The O'Reilly brothers were to the fore at the Banks Peninsula meeting at Motukarara yesterday.

Leo O'Reilly trained and drove Jerry Garcia and Shudawudacuda to win; Gerard won with Junkyard Su and Patrick was successful with Tyron Lochie.

The 2yr-old Jerry Garcia, was a $28,000 purchase at the premier yearling sale last year. Leo's cousin, Frank, who was in the ownership died last year.

Jerry Garcia is raced by his estate with Mark Copland, of Ashburton, his son, Todd and Barney Brice of Motukarara.

Jerry Garcia is from the first New Zealand crop of Jereme's Jet who won in 1.50.8 at two and 1.48.2 at three in the United States. He ran 1.47 in a time trial at four. The son of Western Hanover won six of his seven starts at two and $US1.1 million in stakes.

Smooth Leyenda, the dam of Jerry Garcia, included the Queensland Oaks and Oceania El Dorado Final in Victoria among her 16 wins. She has left other winners Western Legend, The Holmes Legend, Pocket Legend and Legend Of The Ball from six foals to race.

Captain Joy won the $40,000 Golden Mile at Menangle on Saturday night in 1.51.4. He won by a head from Lincoln Royal (Sir Lincoln in New Zealand).
