Forget the calculators - Majestic Time made sure of a start at the Harness Jewels at Ashburton later this month with a confident win at Oamaru yesterday.

The Michael Ward trained mare was sitting precariously at 12th on the 4yr old trotters' order of entry for the group 1 mile (1069m) on May 30 going into yesterday's meeting at Oamaru.

Race rivals Santorini Sunset and One Over Da Moon could have made things very awkward for the daughter of Majestic Son if they flew past her yesterday but driver Ken Barron was having none of it.

He put Majestic Time up on the speed and she proved too tough for her rivals with a 1 length win despite sitting parked for much of the trip.

Ward, of West Melton, was able to relax after the race with the $5315 winning stake lifting Majestic Time to ninth in the standings and out of trouble.

''It was a little bit nervous there for a while,'' he said.

So with part one of the Jewels mission complete, Ward hopes to complete part two by giving his mare a quiet time between now and Ashburton.

''We only have a 600m track so we can't do much with them there,'' he said.

''But I learned a long time ago that if they've got speed, keep it for race day if you can. It's no good burning them out on the [training] tracks.''

Ward will keep an eye on the barrier draws on Friday with interest particularly if Majestic Time draws away from the markers.

''I think she's a royal show if she just trots,'' he said.

''She's had three gallops this season and we don't know why.

''We've been trying to iron it out but I don't think she likes it on the rails so I don't mind sitting three back on the outer. That would be lovely behind something like King Denny.''

Majestic Time's win meant Father Christmas will now have to rely on withdrawals to make the 4yr old trotting division final despite winning the mobile trot yesterday.

His $4685 winning stake took him to 13th place on the leaderboard.

Trainer Phil Williamson said he would keep the son of Love You fit during the next 10 days in case there was a withdrawal above Father Christmas.

The Jewels are not a factor for Corroboree or Late Mail but they provided Kaiapoi trainer Gavin Smith with a double yesterday.

Late Mail was on debut yesterday and was doing everything quickly at the moment, Smith said.

''He was a late foal [January 3] so he was always a bit weak but just the last two or three weeks he's really started to improve and get a bit stronger,'' he said.

''We'll chuck him out now and he'll do a really good job next year I think.''

Corroboree was having his third start after mixed efforts in his first two starts at Addington and Timaru.

''He's on the market but otherwise, if he doesn't sell, we'll just race on with him. He should be able to pick up a penalty free win anyway.''

Corroboree was one of six horses to set a track record on a lightning fast Oamaru track yesterday.

He set a mark for 3yr old male pacers for a 2600m mobile pace running 3.16.7, while Late Mail created a mark for 2yr old pacers from a 2600m standing start as no juvenile pacers had won from a 2600m stand before.

Belmont Fire equalled Dakota Grace's 2011 time of 2.25.0 for a 2000m mobile, Gracious Star ran 3.13.8 for a 2600m mobile pace in a briskly run amateur drivers' race and Majestic Time's win was a track record for a 2600m open stand.

Father Christmas set a record of 3.18.2 in the 2600m mobile trot.
