Driver becomes winning trainer

Kerryn Tomlinson rewrote the history books during her big day out at Winton yesterday.

The Oamaru horsewoman added winning trainer to her list of harness racing accomplishments when Dare Devil swept home to score.

Tomlinson is a newcomer to the training ranks, having taken out her licence last year and training alongside Brad Williamson, who she continues to work for.

"Since I finished as a junior driver I thought I would have a crack at training."

"I have always owned horses and pretty much trained them myself and had them with Brad.

"Hopefully we can keep kicking home winners in the training ranks and the driving ranks."

Tomlinson bought Dare Devil late last year, the pacer mixing his form while being handed a series of tough draws.

While the 5-year-old wasn’t handed the best starting spot yesterday, things finally went his way.

"I am pretty happy with this fella today, he ran a good time," Tomlinson said.

"He just needed to get the right run, they were going hard up front and we were sitting back doing nothing.

"He came swishing home, which was great."

Tomlinson was back in the winner’s circle when her old favourite, the Brad Williamson-trained Domination’s Call, ran to a track-record-breaking win in yesterday’s feature trot.

Tearaway leader Spells Of Love set up a sizzling speed with Domination’s Call proving too strong at the end of a testing 2400m, cut out in 2min 59.8sec.

"He has always been a favourite, right from the start.

"Brad has been really good. He has let me drive him pretty much the whole way through his career. ...

"He has got a great bunch of owners — Ray and Joan Scott from Timaru."

"They will be rapt."

Domination’s Call completed a winning double for the Williamson stable following Tabasco’s standout 2400m victory.

The 5-year-old worked hard to find the lead before outstaying his rivals in arguably the biggest win on the Winton card.
